Monterey Sports Center |
The Monterey Sports Center has a
reputation for the finest in facilities and service with a high rate of
repeat guests. This is a 72,000 square foot facility that includes two
indoor pools, a 112 foot water slide, two Group Exercise Studios, Cardio
Fitness Center, Weight Training Center, Three-Court Gymnasium, Therapeutic/
Assessment Center, Kids Zone, Sports Cafe, Pro Shop, and much more.

Information |
Currently
there are two Lifeguard positions available. Selected candidate must be
available and willing to work weekdays between 5:00 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. and
weekends between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Additionally candidate must be
available to work special events as needed.

A limited number of applicants who clearly show that they
most closely meet the needs of this position in terms of training,
experience, education, and other job-related characteristics will be
accepted to participate in the selection process. This process will
include evaluation and initial screening of the standard City
application
and supplemental questionnaire to determine which candidates progress in the
recruitment process and may include a panel interview, swimming/lifeguarding
performance test, and a final departmental interview. Eligible candidates
are required to submit to and successfully pass a drug screening for
controlled substances prior to hire; and, if selected for employment will be
subject to on-duty random drug testing as a condition of employment.
Selected candidate will be required to take a physical examination and sign

| Definition |
Performs duties of a lifeguard. Supervises and maintains pool area including
supervision of staff and participants, and other related duties as assigned.

| Examples of Duties |
|
Duties may include, but are not
limited to, the following: Performs duties of a Lifeguard. Assist
with programming and implementation of aquatics programs. Supervise staff
and maintain pool area including equipment and facility. Meet and deal
tactfully and effectively with the public. Work with patrons in the aquatic
facility and / or with aquatic staff to solve problems. Assist, and / or
supervise various aquatic related programs at the facility. Perform other
duties as needed.

| Requirements |
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely
provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical
way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
One year experience as a lifeguard. Experience in supervising and organizing
group activities, supervision of staff and excellent public relations skills
are also important. Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Knowledge and Abilities: Must be able to work professionally with
groups and individuals participating in programs, work as a part of a
professional team, collaborate effectively with all levels of recreation
staff and render consistent and logical decisions. Successful candidate will
possess excellent public relations skills.
License(s) and/or Certificate(s) and Additional Requirements: If you
posses any of the following, be sure to record that information on your
application.
Must possess valid CPR for the Professional Rescuer / Community First Aid
and Lifeguard Training Certificates. Certification in any of the following
is desirable: aqua aerobics, safety training for swim
coaches, lifeguard instructor / CPR / First Aid Instructor, emergency response, EMT. A valid
California Driver’s License may be required as a condition of employment for
some positions whenever business necessity is demonstrated. Must be at least
18 years of age, and possess a valid Tuberculosis Certificate. Must meet
personal appearance and dress standards of the department able to attend
in-service training sessions; work a varied schedule each week.

Compensation |
This position works an average of 30
hours per week. The following are the benefits provided.
Hourly Pay: $11.84 (Step 1) to $14.38 (Step 5) per hour.
Retirement: PERS 2% at 55 highest year formula. Employee’s 7%
contribution to PERS is tax deferred. City participates in the Medicare
portion of Social Security only.
Health Plan Spending Fund: $175 per month for
employees who opt out of the City's medical plan or $310 per month for
employees who choose to participate in the City's medical plan.
Sick Leave: Accrue 6 hours per month.
Holidays: 13 paid days annually (6 hours per holiday).
Vacation: 1-5 years/5 hrs per month; 6-10 years/7:30 per month; 11-15
years/ 8:30 per month; 15+ years/10 hours per month.

- Candidate selected will serve
up to one (1) year
probationary period.
- Candidates who pass the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list. This
list may be used to fill additional positions that become available during the life of the
list.
