SAFETY TIPS
Sound Meters Help Reduce Vehicle Noise
Loud vehicle noise is certainly annoying, but more importantly, it is against the law to operate
a noisy vehicle. The most common vehicle noise complaints
we receive involve motorcycles.
To help reduce vehicle noise throughout the City, we have started a campaign to educate motorists about laws that relate to sound levels. And we will be enforcing them.
For example, no motorcycle can be sold, licensed or operated within the state if the engine registers a sound decibel level above 92dBA. Motorcycles that exceed the permitted sound level usually have been modified with an after-market exhaust system.
Armed with three new sound meters, Monterey police officers will work to identify noise level violators.
First-time offenders can expect a “fix-it” citation, while repeat offenders will be issued a non-correctable “notice to appear” citation.

For more info on this program or other public safety issues, call the Police Department
at 646.3819 or visit us on the Web at www.monterey.org/mpd.

Living with Mountain Lions: Prepare, Take Precautions
Some areas of the Central Coast, including the Monterey Peninsula, are considered prime mountain lion country. These large, powerful predators have always lived here, preying on
deer and other wildlife. Like any wildlife, mountain lions can be dangerous.

Here are some precautions that you should keep in mind:

  • Do not hike alone
  • Keep children close to you
  • Do not approach a lion
  • Do not run from a lion
  • Do not crouch down or bend over
  • Do all you can to appear larger
  • Fight back if attacked

Immediately report all mountain lion encounters or attacks:
Call 911 to report any face-to-face encounter with or an attack by a mountain lion. The threat to public safety will be assessed and any appropriate action will be taken.

Next Time Take a Taxi - Seniors Save 50%
How do seniors save 50% on taxi rides?
Through the City’s Senior Taxi Scrip Program, seniors
can purchase a $20 booklet of taxi scrip (like coupons)
from the City for $10. Scrip is used like cash – to pay for cab fare with the Yellow Cab Company to travel in the community.

What are the rules?
Scrip is only good for travel within the cities of Monterey, Seaside, Sand City and Del Rey Oaks. Seniors must be at least 65 and live in the Monterey city limits. Scrip cannot be given or sold to someone else and can only be used with the Yellow Cab Co.

Where can I buy scrip booklets?
Booklets are available at the Monterey Senior Center (280 Dickman Avenue),
Casanova Oak Knoll Park Center (735 Ramona Avenue) and
at the City’s Recreation & Community Services Administration Office (546 Dutra Street).

For info call 646.3866 (suggest@ci.monterey.ca.us).
