Teen Volunteer a City “Hero”
When it comes to volunteerism – Elisabeth Pinkerton talks the talk and walks the walk.

Who: A high school senior, Elisabeth Pinkerton has been a City volunteer for the last two years. As a volunteer, she assisted staff and worked with children attending the summer playground program at Hilltop Park Center. Most recently Elisabeth designed a craft project for children to work on at Kid’s Fest, a special event for children and families. The experience she gained in volunteering led her to a paid position this past summer as a Recreation Leader.

Why volunteer: Her love of working with young children attracted her to the City’s Volunteen program, where teens assist City staff during the summer.

On volunteering: “I’ve been volunteering since the end of sixth grade. Sometimes it’s tiring, and I think I could be doing something else, but then I see it through and feel terrific.
“Volunteering is really rewarding. I’m a better person for it and besides, it’s fun!”

To volunteer or get more info about volunteer opportunities at the City, call the City’s Volunteer Program at 646.3719 (dillemut@ci.monterey.ca.us).

Household Ideas for Curbing Pollution
Landscaping and gardening activities can be major contributors to ocean pollution.
Soils, yard wastes and garden chemicals become part of the urban runoff mix that winds its way through streets, gutters and storm drains before entering the ocean.
Learn what you can do to make a difference:
Landscaping Tips

  • Protect stockpiles and
    materials from wind and rain
    by storing them under tarps
    or secured plastic sheeting.
  • Schedule grading and excavation projects during dry weather.
  • Prevent erosion by planting fast-growing annual and
    perennial grasses to shield
    and bind the soil.

Garden & Lawn Maintenance

  • Do not over-water. Conserve water by using properly functioning drip irrigation, soaker hoses or micro-spray systems.
  • Place clippings and pruning waste in approved containers for pick up.
  • Do not blow or rake leaves into the street, gutter or storm drains. These yard wastes carry chemicals into the ocean and clog storm drains, which can lead to street flooding.
  • Do not over-fertilize and do not fertilize near ditches, streams or other bodies of water.
  • Use organic or non-toxicfertilizers.
  • Store pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals in a covered area to prevent runoff.
  • Avoid pesticide and herbicide use as much as possible.
