Shades of Monterey Photo, Story Day
Back by Popular Demand
In keeping with our ongoing effort to
document local history and preserve community memory, the Monterey Public
Library will launch its third Shades of Monterey project this fall with a
Photo and Story Collection Day.
Slated for Saturday, Oct. 21, the project is an invitation to local
residents to come to the Library and share their family photo albums and
personal and family stories. Photos will be scanned and stories recorded for
inclusion in the Library’s California History Room Collections
and Archives. Mark your calendar now for this popular event.
For more info about how you can participate, call Library
Special Services Coordinator Jeanne McCombs at 646.3949 or email

International Exchange Focuses on
Preservation, Communications
As part of our continuing technical
relationship with the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia, the City recently hosted a
group of elected officials and staff members, including the mayor, who were
here to explore ways to promote and preserve their cultural and
architectural heritage; diversify their economy beyond tourism; and
establish a stronger program to encourage public involvement in the
governing process.
As part of the technical exchange, Monterey is looking to gain
insight into historic preservation and restoration approaches. Under the
auspices of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the
International City Management Association (ICMA), the program works to
assist cities and countries who do not have a long history of democracy in
developing a strong economic base and a more open political environment. All
of the City’s costs are paid for by the USAID.
