TRASH TALK... Dead Batteries Now Easy to Unload

When the energy is spent, dispose of alkaline and rechargeable batteries at select City facilities around town. Batteries are now considered hazardous waste and are banned from landfill sites.
To support community-wide disposal efforts, the City has become an authorized collection facility. It’s now easier than ever, so participate and keep your community hazard free.
Drop off locations include: City Hall, corner of Pacific and Madison streets (646.3935); Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific St. (646.3932); Casanova Oak-Knoll Park Center, Ramona and Euclid avenues (646.5665); Hilltop Park Center, Jessie Street and David Avenue (646.3975); Scholze Park Center, 280 Dickman Ave. (646.3878); Monterey Youth Center, 777 Pearl St. (646.3873); and Whole Foods Market, 800 Del Monte Center (333.1600).
Batteries must be placed inside the containers marked for battery waste only and will only be collected during regular business hours. Call ahead for hours and drop-off site specifics. Remember fluorescent bulbs also are hazardous waste and must be taken to the Marina Landfill. Call the Monterey Regional Waste Management District at 384.5313 or visit www.mrwmd.org for hours of operation.

Outdoor Volunteer Projects Keep Bay Beautiful

Learn about keeping our Bay healthy! Volunteers are needed for summer water-monitoring as well as storm drain stenciling projects. It’s a great chance to work outdoors. That pesky invasive kelp, Undaria, is still hanging around Monterey Harbor. Volunteers can help “weed” the harbor from the docks or if certified as a scuba diver, from the water.
