Community Embraces Public Safety Outreach Efforts

Efforts to enhance communication between the City and community on public safety and crime issues have garnered strong public support and continue to gain momentum. With the goal of reducing crime and boosting security, we have divided the City into 20 Community Policing Areas and are assigning two officers to each one.
The Monterey Police Department has worked with community groups to bring twelve of the 20 areas online. All areas are scheduled to be up and running by the end of 2006. Officers are already connecting with the residents and businesses in their areas, sharing information and helping to resolve ongoing issues. Community Policing Teams have been well received at well-attended group meetings designed to address area specific issues and gather input. Get progress reports by participating in upcoming meetings.
Area maps and meeting dates can found on the Web at www.monterey.org/mpd

Summer Reading Program Offers Excitement

Adventure awaits kids of all ages who participate in the Monterey Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme was “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales @ Your Library,” including a ton of activities celebrating the animal world.

“Reading over the summer break helps minimize the loss of reading skills and is also a great opportunity for kids to explore topics that are not part of the school curriculum and to just read for fun,” said Youth Services Manager Karen Brown.
Weekly programs included songs, stories, crafts and special visits with animals and animal experts. The program is non-competitive and family-based. Participants set individual reading goals and earn prizes along the way.
Congratulations to all those who have made reading part of their summer fun! For more info on upcoming activities, call the Library Youth Services at 646.3934 or check the Web at www.monterey.org/library

Second-Generation Bookmobile Turns 20

Join the celebration – the Monterey Public Library Bookmobile turns 20 this year. A mainstay of Monterey life, bookmobiles have been delivering library services to neighborhoods since 1956. The current bookmobile, our second generation, was inaugurated in 1986 and has provided greater access to a wide-variety of library material. The Library recently commemorated the milestone during the City’s Fourth of July celebration.

Caring Contagious, Rewarding

More than 1000 people participated in acts of caring during this year’s Dare to Care Day event on April 28. Sponsored by Community of Caring Monterey Peninsula, Dare to Care Day encourages community members to volunteer their time on one designated day to make a difference around the Monterey Peninsula. More than 20 community projects were reported this year alone.
In Monterey, some 20 Starbucks employees supported a beatification and soil erosion project at Laguinta Miranda Park. Children from the Casanova-Oak Knoll and Hilltop Park community centers afterschool programs participated in a neighborhood cleanup.

Tell-a-Celebration a Great Success

Stories for Adults, the first and longest running program of its kind in the nation, celebrated its 20th birthday with a full day of storytelling this June. The event, hosted by the Monterey Public Library, included performances and workshops with renowned storytellers including Donald Davis and Elizabeth Ellis.
