historic buildings, walking tours and a photo gallery.
A key section of the site helps teachers prepare for visits to the
area. Or just learn about upcoming events and how this group works to
promote our history.
This brand new resource was produced through Historic Monterey, a

Parks and the City. Take a tour anytime.
Access to
Library Archives Enhanced
Learn more about the historic archival
collections at the Monterey Public Library via the catalog.
Narrative descriptions now highlight the collection materials, which include
maps, illustrations, documents, ledgers, photos and albums.
There are currently 365 records (including more than 250 individual
map records) describing these important materials that are available for
review in person by appointment. More records will be added as work
continues on this catalog project.
Through additional work funded by a grant from the Doud Fund of the
Community Foundation for Monterey County, representative photos and texts
from the collection will soon be displayed digitally in the catalog as well.

Arts & Culture
Local Artists Share "Impressions"
“California Impressions,” an
exhibit featuring works by three local artists, is open in the Alvarado
Gallery thru Sept. 9. View art by plein-air painter Vivian Cornwall,
sculptor Jack Merrill Gray and artist Paula Walzer, who creates etchings,
monotypes, collages and mixed media.
Expressed in different ways, their works reflect the beauty and
diversity of the California landscape.
The City’s rotating art exhibits at the Alvarado Gallery provide
opportunities for local artists to display their works and for residents and
visitors to experience the range of visual art our community has to offer.
The Alvarado Gallery is open free of charge Monday thru Friday 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. It is located on the second floor of the Monterey Conference Center at
One Portola Plaza.

Reorganization Tucks Museum, Citywide Cultural Arts
under Library's Wing
Our museums and cultural arts
programs are now part of the Monterey Public Library team.
While customer services will not change, this innovative approach highlights
how we can be more efficient and effective as an organization.
“I believe this type of Library oversight is unique in the state,
if not the country,” says Library Director Kim Bui-Burton. “However, our
shared missions of preservation, access and cultural enhancement make this a
natural fit.”
This reorganization enhances years of cooperative effort that once
crossed division and
management lines. Now community projects related to historic preservation,
cultural events and cultural tourism fall neatly beneath one umbrella.
Most recently, our Library and Museum staff has been working
closely to improve our resources and promote the past with Historic
Monterey, a collaboration which includes California State Parks, the
Monterey History and Art Association and the City.
For more info on this and other related programs, check with Library
Director Kim Bui-Burton at 646.5601 or send an email
