Focus on Trees -
Tips for Trimming Monterey Pines

  • Trim Monterey Pines in the late fall and early winter. Shorter days and cooler temperatures decrease the possibility of attacks from destructive pine bark beetles.
  • Avoid trimming your tree in the spring or summer. Longer days and warmer temperatures stimulate more sap flow and insect activity in pines.

When you trim a tree, "wounds" are created that increase the risk of attack form the bark beetles, which can kill trees. This insect has been known to assist in the spread of the pine pitch canker fungus, which has already destroyed many trees throughout the Monterey Peninsula.
