Historic Simoneau
Materials Now Part of Library’s Archives
Letters, newspapers and schoolbooks from the late 19th and early
20th centuries that belonged to the descendants of 19th-century
restaurateur Jules Simoneau were recently donated to the City. These
historic materials are now a part of the Monterey Public Library’s
California History Room collection. The material was originally
donated to the Robert Louis Stevenson Club of Monterey by descendants of
Simoneau, represented by the Ussery family. The Stevenson Club, in turn,
made a gift of the archival material to the City. This material
expands the Library’s resources related to the relationship between the
families of Jules Simoneau and Robert Louis Stevenson. Jules Simoneau
befriended the Scottish writer when he visited here in 1879, and they
remained friends for the rest of their lives.
