Youth – from toddlers to teens – make up an important part of our
community. Their success today and in the future is essential to
maintaining the quality of life we enjoy here in Monterey. The City
strives to find ways to encourage youth to participate in and feel a part
of the community. From fun, entertaining activities to volunteer
opportunities and educational experiences, many programs and events are
offered at City sites especially for youth. See what’s happening at
the Library, Community Centers, the Sports Center and on the Volunteer
front. Find out more about the resources available and the opportunities
provided that encourage young people to make a difference in the
community.

Discover New Hobbies During TV-Turnoff Week Turn off your TV
April 24-30 and have an adventure. TV-Turnoff Week encourages families to
find additional ways to have fun and learn – one way is to visit the
Monterey Public Library or Bookmobile. Not only does the Library have
books for reading fun, but also books and videos with suggestions and
directions for hobbies, games and crafts. During TV-Turnoff Week, the
Library will have a Hobby Day for young people to showcase their interests
and get ideas from others. There will be other special events as well.
Visit the Library to pick up your TV-Turnoff packet, complete with
caution tape to drape across the TV! Challenge your family to watch less
TV and have fun. For more info, call the Youth Services Librarian at

Discover great search engines, logon to helpful homework centers,
find special Web sites to assist with your history and science projects.
Local youth can find these great tools on the Library’s Web pages
designed especially for them. The Library’s Kids’ Page offers dozens
of links that provide quick info on how to use the Internet and guidelines
for citing Internet sources. There are fun and entertaining sites too.
These resources provide – via the Web – the quickest and best answers
to homework questions and other needs because they have been previewed and
selected by children’s librarians. The Library’s Web site, including the
Kids’ Page, is “virtually” open 24 hours a day. Check out the
Library’s Web site online at home or at the Library and click on Kids’ Page

At Community Centers
Kids and teens have many choices at the City. There are dances
and music, gardening and pottery. Martial arts, gymnastics and cooking.
Or you can swim, take fitness classes or play sports like wrestling,
football and basketball. City sites in the community house activities and
programs for learning and fun. Holiday programs and camps for toddlers
and school-age youth take place at the Community Centers. The Monterey
Sports Center offers both a sports camp and cheerleading camp in the
spring. The Sports Center also features a lifeguard training program
in March and a water safety instructor course in April where young people
can develop new skills and abilities that could lead to exciting
employment opportunities. For info regarding specific classes and
