Working to Support Local Schools

Education is key to a healthy, vital community. To that end, the City has supported the Monterey Peninsula School District (MPUSD) in a variety of ways throughout the years.
MPUSD serves the cities of Del Rey Oaks, Marina, Monterey, Sand City and Seaside, as well as portions of Monterey County. It is a separate organization governed by a voter-elected board.
   The City is committed to the success of our youth and MPUSD. Monterey has invested more than $875,000 (as of summer 2004) in developing partnerships with MPUSD. We also fund services geared toward school-age children. To learn more, click on the links below.


Support to MPUSD for Facilities (as of summer 2004)

> Improvements on several school sites (exceeds $1,164,000)
   - Bayview ($295,000)
   - Larkin ($235,000)
   - Monte Vista ($385,000)
   - Foothill ($124,000)
   - Colton ($60,000)
   - Monterey High ($65,000)
> Signal at Franklin and Monroe streets intersection
   and signage around the school when Larkin School reopened ($300,000)
> Sidewalks on Helvic Avenue and a safe "Routes to School" plan for Del Monte School
> Offers to provide maintenance on a reimbursable basis
> Athletic field maintenance
> Institutional Network
   - (hundreds of thousands of dollars of network access and equipment at no charge)
> Offer to place Sports Center at Monterey High
> Free use of City athletic fields
