Annual Report 1999

Priority Projects Define City’s Past, Guide Future
Priorities. We all use them to manage our time, activities and resources. The City of Monterey is no different.
Each fiscal year, we identify City priorities that help establish our budget and guide our projects and work programs.
In this issue of City Focus, we outline some of our priority activities and provide you, our citizens and friends, with a status report. Inside this annual report that is distributed each fall, we review last fiscal year’s (1998-99) activities and accomplishments and introduce you to the priority activities now underway in the current year. We also invite you to help shape our priorities for the coming year by filling out the enclosed Community Survey. Please take five minutes to fill it out and send it in by October 30.
Thank you for taking the time to read this report, fill out the survey and find out what’s happening in the City. Together with residents and business owners, we are working to provide quality services that help make Monterey an even better place to live, work and visit.
We have placed the various goals and objectives into six categories. In most sections you will find an update on some of last year’s activities and highlights of the plans for this year.

    The categories are as follows:
  • Land Use - issues about physical growth and development activities in the City;
  • Historic Preservation - policies and programs regarding historical sites and activities;
  • Social - community outreach programs, workshops and volunteer opportunities;
  • Public Safety - the police and fire departments;
  • Economic - development of City-owned property as well as programs that enhance our community’s vitality; and
  • Public Facilities - the buildings or land owned or leased by the City.
  • Budget - Balancing the 1999-2000 Budget
Through many programs and activities – surveys, town hall meetings, public hearings, suggestion lines – we gather your input, comments and concerns. This material helps us shape and prioritize our projects. Many of the projects this year reflect your earlier suggestions and comments.
We invite you to get to know more about your City and to get involved! Send us your comments or suggestions.
