Monterey Goals: Past,
Present and Future
Welcome to the City Focus on community
priorities. In this annual report to our citizens and friends,
we review last fiscal year’s (1997-98) activities and
accomplishments, introduce you to the priority activities now
underway in this current year and invite you to help shape our
priorities for the coming year. The City, in partnership with
you, our residents and business owners, works to make the community
an even better place to live, work and visit. The City would like
to thank you for taking the time to read this report and learn about
the ways you can help make a difference in the City. Public input at
town forums and public hearings last year indicated that affordable
childcare, citizen involvement, cultural arts and history were
important issues. Many of the projects this year reflect your
suggestions and comments.
In this report, we have placed the
various goals and objectives into the following six categories:
- Public
Safety - our police and fire departments;
- Historic
Preservation - our policies and programs regarding historical
sites and activities;
- Social
- our community outreach programs, workshops and volunteer
opportunities;
- Economic
- development of City-owned property as well as programs that have
an economic impact;
- Public
Facilities - the buildings or land owned or leased by the
City; and
- Land
Use - development of sites in the City not owned or leased by
the City.
Each category has articles about activities
and programs from last year and/or this year. Some projects,
such as Monterey Bay Park (Window on the Bay) as well as the growth
of our volunteer program, were priorities last year and continue to
be again this year. New programs such as the Canine Unit in the
Police Department are just getting underway. We invite you to
get to know more about your City and to get involved! Send us your
comments or suggestions.
