Annual Report 2003
Housing

Housing affordability and availability are priority issues at the City. Many challenges exist throughout the county to address the needs of existing families and new residents. The City is committed to supporting programs that provide additional housing opportunities and to developing policies that address affordability and availability.

Affordable Rental Units On the Way
The future of housing in the community is described in the draft General Plan, which has been going through the public and City review process. The proposed plan encourages more housing in the form of “mixed-use” projects (housing integrated with commercial uses on the same site) in our business districts,
particularly Downtown, East Downtown, Lighthouse Avenue and Cannery Row.

Three such projects are currently under construction:
  • The Wave Street Apartments includes 21 apartments permanently designated as affordable for low- and moderate-income workers who are employed in and around Cannery Row.
  • The upper floors of the new building at the old Dream Theater site on Lighthouse Avenue will include 17 apartments, three designated as affordable for low- and moderate-income households.
  • The second floor of the new commercial building at the corner of Sloat and
Del Monte avenues will be home to nine units
, and three are designated affordable for low- and moderate-income households.

Look for ads from the individual developers when the apartments are available for rent. Please note, the City’s housing office oversees compliance with affordable housing regulations but will not advertise or market these rental units.
