Annual Report 2002
Public Safety

Promoting public safety in the City and nurturing a sense of security in our neighborhoods, business districts and in schools continue to be the focus in many of our programs.

Traffic Issues on the Table
Traffic on Lighthouse Avenue has increased 20 percent since the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center & Presidio of Monterey (DLIFLC & POM) closed to through traffic last fall.

This year the City will continue to evaluate methods that were introduced to deal with congestion and the change in traffic patterns due to the closure. Research and analysis will continue to center on Lighthouse Avenue tunnel issues and traffic patterns in the New Monterey and Old Town neighborhoods.

Residents and business owners are invited to participate in City workshops, scheduled to be held this fall, to help develop solutions to best resolve and find near- and long-term compromises for traffic concerns. Look for updates in the local media and on this Web site
