Public Service Center | Sports Center Expansion | Catellus Property Update

The needs of the community drive upgrades to City buildings and facilities as well as development of City-owned or leased land. Citizen input is vital to the decision-making process. The Monterey Sports Center expansion, Monterey Bay Waterfront Park and Osio Plaza are recent examples of projects identified as priorities by the community.

Public Service Center
The proposed Public Service Center continues to move through the City review process. The Public Service Center would consolidate city offices into one central location and provide easy and efficient access to city services now scattered throughout the community. Just as with any new development proposal, the project must receive permits and be reviewed by various City commissions and committees. A preliminary design was approved (at left) and an environmental study, dealing with traffic, parking and residential impact issues, is underway. The two-story building is proposed to be located between Dutra and Van Buren streets behind City Hall. The City Council will have final review of the project. Sports Center Expansion
Expansion of the Monterey Sports Center is on schedule. Soon to be open for business: an additional 15,200 square-feet of space, including a c
ardiovascular workout area, weight room and tot activity center. The new addition is scheduled to open this winter.

Beachfront Land Use Under Construction
Plans for seven acres of City-owned beachfront property at the foot of Wharf II are moving through the approval process. Also known as the Catellus property, the land was purchased to create additional public access to Monterey’s coast. It will also provide a seamless interface with Monterey Bay Waterfront Park, the harbor and the beach.

A design plan is moving through the public review process and is scheduled to come before the City Council later this year. Plans call for increasing open space and making it easier to get to the beach and coastline. Site drawings propose areas where buildings would be removed for recreational use.
