At present, the department has 53
paid personnel and a part time Fire Inspector and three fire
stations. The fire department responded to over 4,538 incidents
in 2006 an increase of 7.65% over 2005.

The Monterey Fire Department provides fire protection to the
Army Defense Language Institute & Foreign Language Center &
Presidio at Monterey, and Sand City, Naval Postgraduate School
and their housing located at La Mesa Village.
Staffing is 15 personnel per shift, 3-platoon system, 53-hour
workweek, and minimum staffing of 12 personnel per shift.
Administrative staffing: 1 - Fire Chief, 4
– Division Chiefs, 3 assigned shift
work, 1 Training Division Chief,
1 - Deputy Fire Marshal and 1- Part
Time Fire Inspector. Support personnel in the office include 1 -
Administrative Analyst - 1 - Executive
Assistant I, 1 -
Administrative Assistant II.
The population of the city is approximately 30,000. Due to fire
service contracts, and tourism, the fire department services a
population exceeding 50,000.
Fire apparatus, 5 - pumping engines, 1 - Quint Aerial Platform
105', a Tiller Truck is on order and should be delivered in
2008, this will take the place of the Quint Aerial Platform 1 -
Rescue, 1 - Reserve Rescue / Utility, 1- Type 3 Wild Land Unit,
1- Urban Search & Rescue Trailer with equipment, 2 - Command
vehicles, 1 - Air Compressor Trailer and a Fire Boat moored at
the breakwater.
The Monterey Fire Department prides itself as being a customer
service organization, providing programs like
Community Emergency Response Training (CERT),
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Fire Prevention Education,
and implementation of an Urban Search and Rescue Response Team
with North County and Salinas Rural FPD.
