The Community CPR Program teaches citizens to contribute to the survival of loved one's and co-workers by empowering them to identify and treat cardiac-related medical emergencies (heart attacks) prior to EMS arrival. Rapid intervention, and activation of the 911 system, has had a dramatic positive effect on the survivability of heart attack victims in our community. Monterey County EMS Agency statistics show that half of the victims that survived a fatal heart attack on the Monterey Peninsula in 1995 were in the City of Monterey at the time of their heart attack. These victims survived because someone performed CPR on them prior to the arrival of the Fire Department and EMS personnel.

City of Monterey employees are trained CPR providers, too. Many of these employees travel through the community as part of their daily jobs, and carry their CPR skills throughout the community each day.

The City of Monterey provides two (2) Fire Department CPR Instructors per CPR class. Each class is limited to sixteen students, per AHA guidelines. Classes are offered once a month, in a city-owned facility.

The Monterey Fire Department Community CPR Program, and our Citizens, are a Community Life-Saving Team: "Working Together to Save Lives."
