Emissions targets are to reduce CO2 output by 56,758 MTCO2 and 1,659 MTCO2 respectively by the year 2020. The goals are based on the reductions recommended by the Urban Environmental Accords. These targets exceed the goals set by AB32 and represent ambitious, yet achievable, emissions reductions that are cost effective and include the progress that has been made in reducing emissions between 2005 and today.
Reduction strategies for both emissions audits include existing programs and policies as well as recommendations for new approaches. The reductions are spread throughout the emissions categories (such as vehicle fleet, buildings and facilities, etc.). The programs and policies offer short-term and long-term strategies that, together, set Monterey on a course to achieve the reduction targets.
In addition to internal reduction strategies, the City of Monterey is actively participating in regional planning to address emissions resulting from regional activity, including transportation and land use.
Finally, implementation and monitoring strategies will help ensure the goals and objectives designed to reduce GHG emissions and improve the sustainability of our community are met.
