All CVS Stores Now Recycle Unwanted Medications
No Drugs Down the Drain
CVS announced yesterday that all of its 7,200 locations will now offer customers an affordable way to safely dispose of unused, expired or unwanted medications. For more disposal options, please click here.
To take advantage of the new service, customers purchase a Sharps Compliance Corp. postage-paid envelope for $3.99 at their local CVS pharmacy; they then mail their medications through the U.S. Postal Service to Sharps Compliance Corp.’s licensed facility for safe destruction.
By law, this program cannot accept controlled substances – illegal drugs or certain prescription medications that are regulated by the government.
Both prescription and over-the-counter medication can pollute the environment if disposed of improperly: Drugs flushed down the toilet can contaminate water sources, and drugs thrown in the trash have the potential to leach out of the landfill and pollute soil and groundwater.

Personal Action Pledge
The City of Monterey is committed to promoting a sustainable future by conserving water, reusing, reducing and recycling solid waste, building "Green" buildings and many other programs. To achieve success, we need all members of the community to play a role. In order for the City of Monterey to reach its GHG (greenhouse gas emissions) reduction target under the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, all of us need to do our part. So, by taking the Personal Climate Action Pledge, we’re asking you to make some personal commitments to behave in a green way by saving water, conserving energy, and reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.

Most of the following measures are doable today! Implement them and strive to reduce your household’s GHGs by at least 10%.

Take the Personal Climate Action Pledge

All you have to do is take the pledge below and send us your name and email address - all information is kept confidential. Please check back on our website for updates or become a fan on Facebook to keep in touch with the City of Monterey's latest green initiatives.

Green Ribbon PledgeMake a difference in your home, your neighborhood, our City – and protect the planet for future generations by taking these small steps:

  • I pledge to conserve water by upgrading my shower head to a water-saving one and keep showers below five minutes.
  • I pledge to conserve water by turning off the faucet when I brush my teeth.
  • I pledge to reduce my use of plastic bags by bringing my own reusable bags to the grocery store.
  • I pledge to use less gasoline by converting at least two trips per month to carpool, public transport, bicycle, walking and/or running.
  • I pledge to reduce my energy use by installing energy-efficient light bulbs in my home.
  • I pledge to conserve water by not watering my lawn between 10am and 4pm.
  • I pledge to use cold water when doing my laundry.
  • I pledge to keep my tires fully inflated.
  • I pledge to turn down the thermostat 3 degrees (F) during the heating season.
Thank you for your participation! A Climate Action Pledge Certificate will be emailed to you.
