The Monterey City Council has named Assistant City Manager Mike McCarthy to the position of Interim City Manager effective January 1, 2014. McCarthy will lead the 400-person City organization after City Manager Fred Meurer retires at the end of December.
McCarthy has been with the City for more than 10 years. He was promoted to Assistant City Manager in 2012 and stayed in his position as Human Resources Director. McCarthy was named Human Resources Director in 2009.
Prior to coming to Monterey, McCarthy worked for the City of San Jose and NASA’s Office of the Inspector General. He was a police officer for the City of Lake Forest Park, Washington. McCarthy has a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University and has a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Washington.
McCarthy lives in Monterey with his wife and three children. He is actively involved in community activities in which his children participate, including baseball, basketball, dance and gymnastics.
