Mission Statement: The mission of the Planning Division of the Community Development Department is the protection and enhancement of the Monterey community through the application of established development standards, environmental controls, historical preservation regulations and citizen participation.
In accomplishing this mission, we strive to continually improve upon our high level of professionalism, impartiality, and ethical conduct while working with the citizenry and outside individuals and agencies.

Purpose: The purpose of the Planning Division, which includes Current and Advanced Planning, is to formulate and implement a broad-reaching planning program for the City of Monterey which serves a variety of community needs.

The Planning Division provides professional guidance and technical assistance to various public hearing boards and commissions and the public; implements and monitors city growth and development policies; analyzes and processes development applications and recommends action on such applications to the City Council, Planning Commission, Historical Preservation Commission, and the  Architectural Review Committee.
