Public
Service Center Project
Latest update, Aug. 11, 2006:
The City Council at their August
11, 2006 meeting rescinded the certification of the EIR for the Public
Service Center project and the rezoning of 450 Madison Street, and revoked
the City Council’s July 5, 2006 action that approved the project.
At this time, there
is no further action scheduled for this project.
Background:
The needs of the community and City staff continue to outgrow existing space
at the Civic Center with offices in cramped spaces scattered around City Hall. To address this issue, the City has developed plans to create a
"one-stop" public service center.
In 2002, a conceptual design for a proposed two-story 55,000 square foot building,
with an 18,000 square foot basement, to located at
the corner of Madison and Van Buren Streets was
approved.
In October 2005, after closely listening to the City Boards and Commissions, the public, and
State Historic Officials, the City Council directed staff to reduce the project
size of the Public Service Center. The new proposal called for a
two-story, three-building above-ground project totaling 26,000 square feet.
